Practice Profile

A Chartered RIBA practice based in a converted theatre workshop in Brixton, Charles Barclay Architects featured in the Architecture Foundation's New Architects 2, a compilation of the best emerging practices in the UK. The team of seven has wide-ranging experience in domestic projects ranging from a low-energy, new-build farmhouse in Cornwall to high-spec inner-London homes; their more recent work encompasses new school buildings in Islington and a highly acclaimed astronomical observatory in Northumberland, won in competition in 2005 and recipient of a RIBA award in 2009. CBA's design approach emerges from a careful appraisal of the site, the brief and the clients' aspirations for the project. Adept at maximising the opportunities for outstanding projects and they then pay great attention to detail during the construction process. They are skilled at inserting new architecture in to historic settings and incorporating environmentally friendly technology unobtrusively in their designs. They understand that an architectural project is ultimately judged by the utility, elegance and rigour of the finished product.
